My Reference Stash |
Although I have never been to these auctions, when I was lucky enough to find their amply illustrated, frequently monographic catalogues, I added them, for well over 20 years, to my personal research library, and was always absolutely thrilled to discover something dealing with my many eclectic interests. They are really UNIQUE identification guides with hard-to-find data, usually containing info about the size, media, dates, styles, signatures, estimated values, and often significant details on the artist or maker. These catalogues are extremely difficult to find because long time knowledgeable collectors around the world had already acquired them through very expensive subscription when they first appeared! They are absolutely indispensable references, whether you happen to be an appraiser, an investor, a collector, a student working on a term paper or thesis, a teacher who wants more diversity in presenting concepts with concrete examples -- maybe you want to try to identify what Grandma has stashed in the attic, or that lovely item you discovered at a yard sale or local country auction -- perhaps you have a shop, might call yourself an expert, researching the different styles of certain things/makers -- hey, even just for a world-traveled packrat like I was in my prime, they always offer exciting new vistas of beauty, creativity and information that I could find nowhere else. |

About This Book |
This LONG OUT OF PRINT catalogue lists and describes 600 lots of the famous assemblage of Rare American Decoys and Bird Carvings from the William J. Mackey, Jr. Collection - Belford, New Jersey ! "William Mackey's collection is undoubtedly the finest of its kind to be held in private hands; this collection was made over a lifetime of careful collecting and learning. Many of the birds being sold in this session are the very birds used by Mr. Mackey to illustrate his book American Bird Decoys. We have attempted to give complete and thorough descriptions of all the pertinent facts about these birds." "Limited to 2,000 copies" Makers include -- Barrett, Crowell, Dodge, Gelston, Hudson, King, Mason's Decoy Factory, Matthews, Parker, Shourdes, Truax, among MANY others! Section divisions -- Factory decoys, New Jersey decoys, Virginia decoys, Brant decoys, Shore bird decoys, Long Island decoys, Crows, owls, gull and other interesting decoys, and MORE! WOWSERS!! OK all you decoy aficionados out there in CyberLandia, I think that this is the OLDEST Bourne decoy reference I have in my stash. It's format is slightly smaller, and perhaps it isn't as well-illustrated as the others, BUT it IS one of the most significant because it contains superb carvings from Mackey's personal collection, AND the ones which appear in his book are identified as such! And it is ONE of only 2k copies ever printed! Your next-door neighbor will most probably NOT have a copy! Extensive Index - Decoys and Life-Size Bird Carvings, Makers.
