Arts and Crafts |
The almost simple country - like Arts and Crafts period of design came before the much more decorative and colorful Art Nouveau style just around the turn of the 20th century, and stressed utility through natural forms. Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Stickleys in furniture, the Grueby and Teco pottery makers, and Frank Lloyd Wright come to mind as notable designers during this return to basics -- the simple material and how it could be worked was the medium, be it wood, clay or metal, and its intended use the highlight. Decoration was usually kept at a minimum, often exploring the linear aspect. There are two different 1999 catalogs of the treasures in the Streisand Collection. This is the first of the two. With any luck, I may also have its companion volume with ERTE, jewelry, and other goodies on eBay at this time. Incidently, the below makers / artisans names, and much more information, are contained in this exceptional BOOK |

About This
Antiquarian Book |
This LONG OUT OF PRINT Antiquarian auction catalogue lists and describes 157 Lots, MOST of which appear to be illustrated, of impressively exceptional Important American Arts + Crafts, Architectural Designs, Art Nouveau and works by Louis Comfort Tiffany from the Barbra Streisand Collection! This fabulous tome begins with a six page article on The Rediscovery of the Arts + Crafts Movement in America, by Robert Judson Clark of Princeton University --
"This rich assemblage of beautiful and instructive objects is offered for sale - items from New York, the Midwest, California and from the Rockies and the praries and New England. It is a superb collection, one of the best of its kind, and until recently has been lived with in Ms. Streisand's former home in Holmby Hills. Now it is available to others, to inspire new collections and to strengthen existing ones, public and private, in this country and elsewhere. Another historical event is in the making." The number of illustrations is SO extensive, that I could only make a guesstimate as to their actual number! Items include -- furniture, lamps and other lighting fixtures, art pottery, earthenware plaques, clocks, copper accessories, leaded glass, among OTHERS!
The works are grouped into sections on -- Stickley (with some Dirk van Erp, Roycraft, Limbert), Grueby, Teco, Rookwood, Frank Lloyd Wright, the Greens, Mackintosh, Important 20th Century Decorative Arts, and Tiffany.
WOWSERS! This is one really exceptional highly sought-after reference source for Arts + Crafts designs, with the added pure delight that they were from the carefully selected personal collection of Barbra Streisand! A most welcome addition to your own personal computer interactive relational database of these kewl items, which will certainly fill in some of the gaps in both actual textual descriptions and pictures -- not to mention the very useful three page Bibliography!
When I was more active 10+ years ago, I would not infrequently see Stickley and other Arts and Crafts furniture as well as Tiffany pieces including lamps and art glass at the estate and country auctions not that far from me in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York -- when Evelio and I had our antique shop open there were several A & C chairs, Tiffany cabinet vases, lamps and favrile shades on display -- most were sold to the New York area dealers who were repeat customers. VERY extensive three page Arts + Crafts Bibliography. Profusely illustrated ! Antiquarian Book in EXCELLENT+ Condition!! |
